The Month of Nothing Done

So the electrician did his final inspection. Now I need to get the town guy to come out and sign off. THEN I can get vents going. I think my guy for the vents is getting me an estimate this weekend. He originally did not think he would have to damage the walls in the upstairs bathroom. Now he things he might. Boo. I asked that he try to do it by damaging the hall outside the bathroom instead (this is why I haven't finished the hall- so that in circumstances like this it's all good :).

I hope the light we end up putting in there is brighter. I have this BEAUTIFUL blueish greenish deep wall color that I love, but the light in the room is so yellow that it just distorts it all and makes it look kinda crummy.

July isn't going to be much better. Going to the shore (YAY AUNT DEBBIE!) this weekend. Then I have work on the 10th, 18th, 25th, and I think 31st. Baptism on the 11th, graduation party on the 17th, birthday that I will likely miss but if I can make it to part of I will on the 18th, and no party but both of my brothers' birthdays are this month and will need to be attended to. Oh, and trying to get to a Lady Gaga concert.

So fun stuff, just not terribly house-ish stuff. We do mow the lawn on a regular basis, and have recently looked into the recycling situation. Also, Brendan put up a shelf! (Perhaps I will get a picture of that).

Oh, and we still have the two trees in our back yard. There were two folks that offered to take them- neither of which has had time. And so now one of them I am pretty sure has a new resident: the most ADORABLE chipmunk. It will be sad when he loses his home. *Think Ferngully*

Anywho, that's it for now!

They Came Bearing Muffins, Fruit, & Juice

Sunday morning we arrived and Bone Daddy had already arrive with Aunt Debbie AND had already started cleaning house.

At times the work was 'fun.'

Other times it was downright scary.

Mostly it was exhausting.

But after those moments of spite and rage against inanimate objects subsided...

...there were moments of victory that made it all worth while (yes- I found and destroyed yet MORE wallpaper).

Victory or slight delirium?

All in all we got some trim painted, the yard and house perimeter largely cleaned up, the downstairs bathroom primed, kitchen scrubbed, and one toilet taken apart/one toilet put together. There was caulking and scrapping and disposing of sorts. The muffins were awesome; we need a wegmans up here in the boonies.

Coming up... the big move!!!

The Move In Day That Wasn't

I was supposed to start moving in today, and that just wasn't in the cards. Last week the floors were finished, a the pipe through living room wall taken out, and the electric upgraded.

So today, what I did do was pick out kitchen and downstairs bathroom tile, carpet, and tile. Thanks to Nanie I got a new ceiling fan and floodlight for the backyard, as well as a few other goodies, and I am looking forward to a pretty solid day tomorrow of work.

While Uncle John worked on the door (he got me the right side this time), the rest of us cleaned up the yard. As you can see there were some big lugs that needed removing (kidding Danny!)

After all this hard work, Danny had a good steam.

No no no... actually we just went out for Chinese! Hunan Taste in Denville.

MEANWHILE...

In my last post I went over March 27th Saturday morning-> evening festivities at the house, meanwhile...

We went SHOPPING! Uncle John got us the Lowes employee discount.

It took some creative thinking getting the crown & base mouldings up to the bedroom. After which we painted them all and put them in Harry Potter's bedroom.

Danny was the typical labourer (drinking beer and goofing off with power tools). Meanwhile Uncle John worked on trying to fit a rectangular door in a trapezoidal opening (didn't work).

End of the day celebrating:

Denville Pizzaria

Walls & Floors

Painting continued... we finished the bedroom and upstairs bathroom. Well, really I ran off with Aunt Debbie and crew to Lowes, and Mrs. Ehlers finished painting the bedroom and upstairs bathroom.

Aidan came upstairs to "help".

Actually he, Brendan, and Mr. Ehlers were rockstars on the floors. Note the lovely piece of black walnut I have as an accent now.

By the way, Mr. Ehlers came back for the next week+ to finish the floors. Things took longer because we got like half a foot of water in our basement and saturated the wood.

Hospitality & First Meal

This just in, first meal served in the Lucarini/ Ehlers household: Homemade pizza (mozz, ricotta, pastrami, spinach, and tomato), pretzels & dip, and beer!

Cheers and may the good times go on!

Good Things Come in Threes: Aunt Debbie, Dad, and Nanie

Two Notes:
1) Yay! Dad got to see my house for the first time and didn't hate it! Yay for artistic vision.
2) Aunt Debbie is not pictured and that drastically understates her participation, it's just that she moves so darn fast you can't capture her on film!

Aunt Debbie and I took turns trying to scrape this out. It was harder than it looks.

We also worked to get up tile and take off window dressings.

Took out the vanity in the downstairs bathroom. Turns out it went straight through the wall!

Unpictured: pulled out the rest of the staples in stairwell and floor in living room and hallway, moved most of the scraps and junk to the garage, got rid of remaining wall paper, pulled out cabinets in downstairs bathroom, uncovered the rest of the radiators, put a door over the opening to my basement where animals could get in, and I am sure there were more things, but off the top of my head that was Saturday!

The Kitchen & What Happened There

Dad bringing kitchen remnants out and then pointing out where the cabinets used to be. Colorful.

Nanie killing mold.

They took this down too.

Brendan washing dishes in the aftermath.

Secret Stashes and Unsung (or pictured) Heroes

Pulling off wallpaper in the kitchen, all of a sudden dust and plaster fall, and I am showered in bee carcasses. Ok may be showered is an exaggeration, but only slightly. Thankfully the hive seems dead.

Found this card, thought it was kind of signature of the house. I mean I have no idea who it's addressed to ("Dot and Click/Chick?") and from Astrid and Paul. Really? Astrid?

Ok, so I know I shouldn't, but I actively feel guilty having thrown this magnet away, lil' baby Jesus sitting in a contractor trash bag with wall paper and house refuse.

As far as progress goes, today was a lot of talk. I met with Peter the handyman my Aunt and Grandmother referred me to and I think he as well as they were a little shocked at the conditions, but I try to focus on the light at the end of the tunnel rather than how dark it is in here. He seems to have a lot of potential and will start on Wednesday, so I look forward to see where we are on Saturday. Also Pete the Spartan Home Inspector (Sparta, NJ) stopped by to verify my bees and mold were dead and easy to rectify. I HIGHLY recommend his services if you ever need a home inspection, thorough, patient, and conscientiously helpful even months later. He along with my family were the unpictured heroes of the day. My aunt alleviated the need for a pry-bar by breaking out some of the tiles and cabinetry with her bare hands. My grandmother came up with her and the handyman to help advise and offer a third opinion, which I appreciated. I was a little nervous about her opinions on the house but I think by the end of it she felt more constructive than scared for me. Then later that day my mother came by and cleaned my refrigerator and the mouse poop under my sink cabinets and made me feel better about having bits of my house not under siege and livable.

Here are a couple of shots where I took down the valences, but other than that I mainly took up some tile and cabinets, and spent a good long time pulling nails from the floor in the living room.
